With summer winding down, Quebec hockey followers can start counting the days until the NHL is back. The 2026–2027 campaign brings a fuller schedule, fresh momentum for the Canadiens after a memorable spring, and an opening night designed to draw attention across the province.
The Canadiens’ Tune-Up Games Start Fast
Montreal has already released its preseason slate, and this year’s setup is compressed into just three dates while still delivering five games.
- September 19: split-squad meetings with the Toronto Maple Leafs in Montreal and Toronto
- September 21: a visit to Trois-Rivières to face the Ottawa Senators at Colisée Vidéotron during a Kraft Hockeyville event
- September 26: another split-squad set, this time against Ottawa
The Trois-Rivières stop gives local supporters a rare chance to see the club up close. Home-game tickets have been available since August 5, so planning ahead should be easy.
A Busier Regular Season Across the League
The NHL’s calendar is also stretching a little longer this year. Every team will play 84 regular-season games instead of the usual 82, pushing the league total to 1,344 games.
| Season Detail | 2026–2027 Format |
|---|---|
| Games per team | 84 |
| Total league games | 1,344 |
| Regular season finale | April 16 |
Why September Matters Before Puck Drop
September is where expectations start taking shape. Coaches get a first real look at line combinations, young players fight for roster spots, and fans get an early read on how the Canadiens may open the year.
For Quebec, that mix makes the month more than just a countdown. It is the first sign that a long, busy hockey season is about to begin.
